Why UnderTorque exists

Built around the knowledge the motor trade creates every day.

UnderTorque began with a practical frustration: solving a difficult problem teaches you something, yet that learning is often hard to capture or find again. The ambition now extends to useful knowledge and better understanding throughout automotive aftersales.

The idea

UnderTorque is an independent experimental project created by Jason Step. It is not currently a registered company or a commercial subscription service. This website showcases the work and invites interest in its future.

What if experience could become useful knowledge without taking ownership away from the people who created it?

That question shaped Technician: a private-first professional knowledge workspace where a technician can capture diagnostic learning, find it again and decide when it should help someone else.

It also shaped Advisor: if the workshop creates valuable technical understanding, some of that learning can help non-technical aftersales staff understand vehicles, manufacturers, maintenance and warranty principles better — provided it is reviewed, governed and taught at the right level.

Turn experience into knowledge people can use.

That promise is deliberately broader than one app. The goal is not to build one giant system. It is to build focused products that help automotive knowledge survive, travel safely and become easier to understand.

What we believe

Good automotive software should respect how the trade actually works.

Experience has value

A proper diagnosis is more than the final part fitted. The tests, evidence and reasoning are reusable knowledge.

Trust affects contribution

People are more likely to capture useful knowledge when privacy, ownership and sharing rules are explicit.

Understanding beats scripts

Non-technical staff work better when they understand the vehicle and its limits instead of memorising phrases.

Evidence matters

Useful knowledge should make its source, applicability and review state easier to see rather than hiding uncertainty.

What UnderTorque is not

Focused knowledge products, not another everything-platform.

UnderTorque is deliberately not trying to replace the systems that already have a different job.

Not a DMS or CRM

Customer records, appointments, job cards and commercial workshop administration belong elsewhere.

Not an OEM data replacement

Authoritative manufacturer procedures and technical information remain essential.

Not automated diagnosis

UnderTorque supports knowledge and understanding; it does not replace qualified technical judgement.

Build with us

We want UnderTorque to grow from real aftersales problems.

If your organisation keeps losing technical learning, repeating the same diagnosis or struggling to build useful automotive understanding outside the workshop, that is the conversation we want to have.
